Alligators: Endangered or Recycled?

An alligator back scratcher

Keychains made of claws

North American alligators are an endangered species

success story. Listed as endangered in the 1970's, it was

reclassified as threatened in 1977 and reclassified again in the

1980's as regulated. This has opened the door for businesses

based on alligators

Alligator farming is a very lucrative business. Farmers must

obtain a license from the government. The main focus

of farming is the production of meat and leather, but

farmers have found ways to use every part of the alligator

even the bones. The only part not used is the viscera.

Alligator parts show up as everything from designer

purses and shoes, back scratchers, key chains, and gruesome

heads for tourists to display.

Even though there are over a million alligators reported in the

wild, they are slowly losing habitat due to

development. According to the alligators, "This really bites"!
